Iâm finally getting the hang of getting in on the passenger side of the car. But I still look the wrong way, as we pull out of the driveway.
âI like your car. Efficient. Functional.â
âDontchya all drive utes in the States?â
âWeâre coming around. From what Iâve seen here, cars cost 50% more. Gas costs 50% more. You guys had to cut short the infatuation with subsidized gas-guzzlers. I will not lie; Iâm a little weak for any American car made before 1970. But we paid for the SUV bonanza in every wayâpsychologically, environmentally, not to mention homeland security.â
âOh, my little mental Georgie.â She drops me a sideways smile and taps my knee. Time to get off my soapbox and say something nice.
âI know we are having a weird whirlwind romance under exceptional circumstances, but I do want to say this: you are way too fucking beautiful to be as kind, easygoing, humble and whip smart as you are.â
âDo you always curse, in yah flattery?â
âFuck. Sorry.â
âIâm just teasing love, thank you. That is so sweet. And quite an original compliment, I must say.â
She taps her cheek for a kiss.
â¢
âShhh. She finally dozed off.â
Veronica has Charlotte in one of those new age baby wrap things. Itâs a replica of the cloth female farmers used to (and probably still do) wrap their babies in, while working in the fields throughout Asia and South America. Now itâs fully branded, organic and for sale in twelve colors at Jack n Jill.
We huddle and whisper.
âIs she ever not asleep?â
âSheâs a newborn!â
âTrust me, sheâs often not. But she is a good baby. Was just fussing a bit this afternoon. But now sheâll sleep fah a few hours.â
Suzanne looks relieved.
âSo nice of you two to come watch her.â
âNah, thanks for letting us. Itâs nice to see her, even sleeping.â I lean in, drop a soft kiss on her forehead and drink in her scent. âI canât get over her babyâs breath.â
âWell, sheâs got some not so nice smells coming out of her elsewhere.â Veronica drops her eyes to Charlotteâs diaper. âDonât judge a book by its covah.â
We giggle. Baby number two jokes are always a hit.
âHey love? Mind if we use a computah or two while we babysit?â
And to think I thought she only called me love. But I appreciate her being proactive with our little covert plan.
âYeah, âcourse. My Mac is in the kitchen. Itâs not locked. If you both need to do a bit of work at the same time, Philipâs laptop is in the study. His password is Victoria Bitter, spelled with the number 3 for the e. All one word. Capital V, capital B. A bit blokey, but easy to remembah!â
His password is basically: BudL!ght.
âSheeehhhm.â Charlotte lets out a sleepy sigh. So cute.
âThatâs my cue! Let me go put her down. Fix yahselves a drink or somethinâ!â
We meander around the kitchen, not sure what to do. Iâm starting to get a bit nervous, but Iâm more curious than anything. And Veronicaâs computer is sitting right there.
